Beyoncé modifies the song’s lyrics after using an insult against those who have spastic cerebral palsy.
Disability rights activists are criticizing Beyonce online for using an albeist slur in one of her songs.
After six years of anticipation, Beyonce released Renaissance, her seventh studio album, on Friday, July 29. The album got positive reviews and spent the weekend at the top of the charts in more than 100 nations.
The hit creator has changed the words to the song “Heated” as a result of some negative feedback.
The album’s track number 11, which contains the word “sp**,” offended several of her supporters and album listeners.
Beyoncé sings the words in the four-minute song “Heated,” which was co-written by Canadian rapper Drake;
“Spaz on that ass, spaz on that ass,” they yelled. The word “spastic” has a history of being used as a slur for people with disabilities, especially cerebral palsy, even though it was ostensibly intended in a colloquial way to signify going crazy or wild.
The most prevalent kind of cerebral palsy, a condition that impairs balance and movement, is spastic cerebral palsy.

Hannah Diviney, a disability advocate, was inspired by the lyrics to write a piece for The Guardian and the disability advocacy group Hireup. In it, she said: “Beyoncé’s commitment to storytelling musically and visually is unparalleled, as is her power to have the world paying attention to the narratives, struggles, and nuanced lived experience of being a Black woman. However, that doesn’t justify her ableist words.
Variety has received confirmation from a Beyoncé spokeswoman that the lyrics will be changed. In addition, they claimed that no harm was intended by the lyrics.
“The word, not used purposely in a bad way, will be replaced,” Beyonce’s brief statement reads.
Beyoncé is hardly the only musician to change her lyrics recently.
Lizzo, a three-time Grammy winner, changed the lyrics to “Do you see this s*? ” from “Grrrls” on her fourth studio album, “Special,” by removing the offending phrase. I’m a sp.”
The lyrics were modified by Lizzo to “Do you see this s***? Keep me in check.
Lizzo addressed her fans on social media after announcing the move.
She said: “It’s been brought to my attention that there is a harmful word in my new song ‘Grrrls.’ One thing needs to be made clear: I will never advocate using insulting words. I am aware of the power that words may have since I am a fat Black woman in America who has endured a great deal of harmful language (whether intentionally, or in my case, unintentionally). I’m pleased to announce that “Grrrls” now has new lyrics. I listened and did something, and the end effect is this. I’m committed to being a part of the change I’ve been waiting to see in the world as an influential artist. ????? “Xoxo, Lizzo”
